OCPS's Our History

Our History

Dr. Barbara JenkinsOrange County Public Schools dates back to 1869. The population of Orange County was 2,195 and teachers were paid one dollar per month per student.

So much has changed in the last 150 years. Orange County Public Schools is now the 8th largest in the nation with more than 213,000 students from 165 countries who speak 157 languages, 199 schools, and more than 25,000 employees.

The district would not be where it is today without the support of the community. Our vision is to be the top producer of successful students in the nation. The mission statement grounds our plan to reach that vision: to lead our students to success with the support and involvement of families and the community.

As the 19th superintendent – and first woman - to lead this great organization, I’m proud to serve the students, parents, and community that make Central Florida a great place to live and work.

I hope that you will find our history fascinating as we look back on where we began, assess where we are today, and contemplate where we’re going in the future.

Barbara M. Jenkins, Ed.D.
